    Franz Strahalm 1879-1935

    Franz Strahalm   1879-1935.  San Antonio, Houston, Dallas.  Landscape, figure, and portrait painter, muralist, teacher.
        Strahalm was born in Vienna and studied there under Frank Weinkle and Franz Strahalm,  his father, followed by instruction at the Hamburg Art School and in Italy, England, and France.  He immigrated to Mexico City in 1909, then moved to San Antonio in 1911 and founded the San Antonio School of Fine Painting in 1919.  He lived afterward in Houston and settled in Dallas in 1921.  There he painted for one year under the name Frank Horst. In 1928 he lived briefly in Hollywood.  He painted and sketched along the Colorado and Pecos rivers, around Christoval, elsewhere in West Texas, and in the pueblos near Taos and Santa Fe.  He died in Dallas.  His son was Wolf Strahalm.
