  • Biography

    Doris Childress (1909-2001)

    Born in Celina and reared in Dallas, Childress studied at age nine at the Aunspaugh Art School, Dallas, attended Sophie Newcomb College, Ne Orleans, and graduated from the College of Industrial arts (Now Texas Woman's University), Denton, before attending the Art Institute of Chicago.  She studied and worked with Don Kingman, Millard Owen Sheets, And Robert Wood.  Childress taught school in Wichita Falls and, following her marriage, studied fashion illustration at Vesper George Art School, Boston, while her husband was a graduate student a Harvard.  She moved in the early 1930s to Houston where she taught privately.  
    Exhibitions:  Annual Southeast Texas Artists Exhibition, Houston (1938).  Annual Houston Artists Exhibition (1939-40,1943,1945-46).  Texas-Oklahoma General Exhibition (1941).  Museum of East Texas, Lufkin (1998).
